What is a well-woman visit?

A well-woman visit gives you time to discuss preventive care and questions about your health. At HealthONE, we review your medical history, medications, prior screening results and current concerns. Depending on your needs, the discussion may include menstrual health, contraception, breast screening, bone health and menopause.

Examinations, tests and referrals are selected for your situation. Tell us what you would like to address when scheduling so our team can help you choose an appropriate visit.

Pap smears and cervical cancer screening

A Pap test looks for abnormal cervical cells. An HPV test checks for types of human papillomavirus associated with cervical cancer. These are different tests, and the screening approach depends on factors such as age, previous results and medical history.

A preventive visit does not automatically mean you need a Pap test every year. Bring the dates and results of previous screening if available so we can discuss whether testing is due. For general guidance, read the National Cancer Institute’s cervical screening overview.

How to prepare for your appointment

  • Bring your medication list, insurance information and relevant medical records.
  • Gather previous Pap or HPV results, particularly if a result was abnormal.
  • Write down questions about periods, contraception, symptoms or preventive screening.
  • Let our team know if you are requesting a Pap test and ask about preparation when scheduling.

You can discuss questions or concerns about the examination with your provider before it begins. Ask how and when to expect results and what follow-up may be needed.

Women’s health care beyond screening

Is a Pap test the same as a well-woman exam?
